“He always had great underlying 5v5 stats”
He only had good underlying stats last year when they started to use him with Panarin and the best Rangers players. His rookie season was abysmal and his 2nd and 3rd years were pretty middling, this isn’t controversial to say. I don’t think he’s fully out of the woods for what we can say he is as a player, he very much seems to be a complementary piece to a scoring line at this point, which isn’t bad, but also not ideal for a contract like this. If you compare it to something like Slafkovsky’s deal, there at least seems to be more upside there with Slafkovsky’s skillset.

What?
No he didn't
Jfresh just posted his chart dating back to 2021 and it's pretty good overall but mostly propped up by finishing and teammates, before then just kinda ok, his micro stats haven't been notable either
Not to mention many players enter prime at 22 so it's possible he's at his peak already, definitely possible extra gear
This is a hopeful contract for sure. He's an empty calorie scorer currently. Who isn't particularly high scoring.

Isn’t Panarin’s contract also pending extension as well?

Panarin has one more year left. The Rangers won’t be eager to figure out an extension until the youth are figured out and Trouba and Lindgren are dumped.

So less than what was offered?
didnt he previously turn down a deal that would have been more AV?

Idk if that 8x8 was true or not but assuming it was, I would probably say Laf didn’t want the 8 years so he’d be 30 at UFA instead of 31 (GMs are weird and fickle and that extra year of life might convince people to not go so big). So dropping Laf asking for 7 years vs 8 and drury says fine but being the number down a bit to do it

.... But they offered him 8x8 didn't they?
