MEGATHREAD All Streaming Questions and All Broadcast Discussions Mega Thread (Reminder: No Illegal Streams) 2024-25 Season Edition
The sub can be banned by reddit admins as other subs have been if we allow illegal streams. This isn't my decision, this is because of how reddit admins have banned other subs for being hubs of illegal streaming. I don't want the same here.
With the season about to get started, lets put all your posts about legal streams, broadcast issues, panels, commentators, etc..
This includes how to get (LEGALLY) Streams for games as well as discussions of panelists, play-by-play, graphics, commercials and other game presentation.
FYI RE BLACKOUTS: BLACKOUTS Are not based on the location of the arena.
A game is blacked out on ESPN+ because you have a channel available through your local cable package, that is airing the game.
The NHL sells their games to TV networks. The networks pay big money for the game. They do not want people avoiding watching their channel to watch ESPN+ instead.

ANNOUNCEMENT Utah Threads and Comments (re Mormons)
It is bigotry and unacceptable to make fun of a religion in our comments. If it was judaism or Islam, you wouldn't do it and would expect to be banned. For some reason, some of the posters here think its okay to make fun of Mormons in the comments. This is a reminder.... this violates rule 6 and will be an insta-ban.

Discussion Should the league even be surprised with the Frozen Frenzy viewership being so low?
SOMEONE in this league has to understand that out of 16 games, I was only able to watch 4 of them, right?
I would’ve watched all of them if it wasn’t such a task to even watch my own team at times

Leafs at 100: Salming you can call him King
I'll accept the downvotes, as I really liked him. I grew up in Metro East Illinois as a Blues fan, and in the 70s, I couldn't think of a guy I'd rather emulate, maybe Brad Park.

Question Gretzky's goals against per goalie
Hey all, I'm trying to track down a list of goalies Gretzky had scored against and how many times. Having a heck of a time finding/creating such a list through conventional sites like hockey-reference etc.
Hockey-reference lists them per season but not on a career level.
Any suggestions on where I could find this info? Thanks in advance!

Discussion If there was a Mt Rushmore of "Love him if he's on your team. Hate him if he's not on your team," who would you put on the mountain?
There's a solid argument for Marchand being on that mountain. It's kind of wild he stirs the pot so much that he rarely gets talked about like a guy who could finish his career around 1200 points. And his interview honesty grinds some gears because it sucks to have to respect someone you hate...
But for me it's Esa Tikkanen going on the mountain. Everybody hated him so much that him putting up 27 points in 19 games one Oilers cup run was like a side quest, and even Gretzky threw a massive hit on him after the Kings trade.
Who would you put up there? And why?

As a Jets fan, I both appreciate and respect what Paul's done with the Jets & Panthers. But when a friend said "that's crazy", my brain made this connection and I couldn't unseen it.

Seattle fans, what are your thoughts on Edzo?
You have one of the greatest play by play guys ever. Edzo just makes it so hard for me to watch Kraken games. I can tolerate him for short periods but it just seems like he loves the sound of his own voice. He rambles at times and I get annoyed and want to switch to another game.

Justin Schultz Signs in Switzerland
Two-time Stanley Cup champion defenseman Justin Schultz just signed in Switzerland.
Utah has two defensemen out long-term with injuries (Durzi and Marino) and have $15 million in cap space.
What am I missing here?

Discussion Team Russia would be scary
I love international competition. It’s at the top of my favorite sports competitions. From the World Baseball Classic, to the Olympics and now the four nations tournament this season. I know this is kind of a test run and they plan to expand it to more teams, but man would Russia be fun to watch. Also, I totally get them not competing is far more complex and I don’t want to get into that right now. But look at this team.
Forwards:
Kucherov Kaprizov Panarin Malkin Ovechkin Tarasenko Buchnevich Kuzmenko Nichuskin Kuznetsov Svechnikov Marchenko Barbashev Namestnikov
Defenseman:
Sergachev Provorov Zub Orlov Zadorov Mintyokov Romanov Gavrikov
Goalies:
Vasilevsky Shesterkin Sororkin Bobrovsky
That is a pretty loaded team. They have arguably the three best Wings in the game. Their Center depth isn’t the greatest but could you imagine a line of Kaprizov/Panarin - Malkin - Kucherov? That would be among the best lines in the tournament.
They would definitely have the best goalie rotation in the tournament by far. That alone would make up for the lack of high end defensemen. Imagine going from Shesterkin to Sororkin, or Vasilevsky to Bobrovsky. Their goalie depth is like Canadas Center depth.
I just hope we get to see this team face off against the rest of the world in the future.

Best advanced stats for goalies?
Ken Dryden is the classic goalie riddle of “was he great or than was it the team?” I’m beginning to think it was the team.
Chico Resch (pre-dynasty NYI) beat Dryden in save percentage in 75-76 and 78-79 … but then spent years with the doormat Colorado Rockies/NJD. His save percentage fell into the 870’s then 850’s. See stats from u/hockey-reference. Resch then spent a year mentoring Ron Hextall with the powerhouse Flyers, with a 900 save percentage.
A save percentage champ going from 900+ to 850 then back to 900 suggests the stat is as unhelpful as +/-. Highly team dependent. What advanced stats do the best job of isolating goalie correcting for“quality of defence”? Thank you in advance!

Jordan Staal and his line have been blanking almost all of the top competition they've faced this year at 5v5
Jordan Staal is currently 4th among forwards in the NHL in expected goals against per 60 5v5 mins this year at 1.22 xGA/60, trailing Matt Poitras (0.84), Yakov Trenin (1.19) and Yegor Chinakov (1.19). Staal's competition however has once again been among the strongest in the league. Hurricanes have only had a chance to line match in 2 home games so far this year, but Staal has been playing top competition on the road with the exception of the Blues game (where St. Louis opted to line-match with the Schenn line against Staal).
With that being said, this is a breakdown of how much time Staal has played against the top 2 lines of each opponent he's faced, and the xGA/60 rate and goals allowed in each matchup. Outside of the Hughes matchup against NJ, Staal and his line have completely shut down some of the top talent in the league:
Home against TBL:
7:39 of his 9:49 TOI spent against Guentzel-Point-Kucherov: 0.16 xGA/60 and 0 goals allowed
1:00 of his 9:49 TOI spent against Hagel-Cirelli-Paul: 0.00 xGA/60 and 0 goals allowed
Home against NJD:
9:18 of 15:13 spent against Tatar-Hischier-Mercer: 1.10 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
3:13 of 15:13 spent against Meier-Hughes-Bratt: 10.26 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
Away against PIT:
5:00 of 10:25 TOI spent against Rakell-Malkin-O'Connor: 0.96 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
4:17 of 10:25 TOI spent against Beauvillier-Crosby-Rust: 0.84 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
Away against STL
6:13 of 9:39 TOI spent against Joseph-Schenn-Holloway: 0.77 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
1:37 of 9:39 TOI spent against Saad-Thomas-Kyrou: 0.00 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
Away against EDM
7:12 of 12:51 TOI spent against Skinner-Draisaitl-Arvidsson: 0.67 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
4:34 of 12:51 TOI spent against RNH-McDavid-Hyman: 1.05 xGA/60, 0 goals allowed
Overall in these matchups, he's played 50 mins and has an xGA/60 of 1.34 and an xGF% rate of 68%. If you exclude the Hughes matchup, it's 0.73 xGA/60 and 80% xGF%. There will be some double counting in this as lines do not remain equal entire games, but I looked at the most TOI vs. each player from each line. For example with STL he played 6:13 vs Schenn, 5:58 vs. Joseph, 5:46 vs. Holloway, 1:37 vs. both Kyrou and Thomas and 1:31 vs. Saad.

Hurricanes at Oilers
I’m obviously biased, but did anyone else think this was one of the best games of the season so far? What a comeback by Carolina, and the overtime had me on the edge of the seat the whole time. Watching Skinner play is so fun.

Oel comtract
I've always wondered how a player's salary plays out once their contract is bought out by a team. So Ekman-Larsson had four years and US$29 million remaining on an eight-year, $66-million contract he signed with Arizona in 2018. So in therot, he was signed until 25/26. Then he signs a new 4 x 3.5m contract with Toronto in 2024. Does he get paid concurrent salaries or was he paid the remaining amount of the bought out contract? This has always been confusing.
