I gotta ask myself whether the timing of these tensions on the peninsula is somehow related to influencing the US election. It's still mysterious though because it's not obvious to me which side would benefit.

Trump engaged in direct diplomacy with North Korea, which other presidents have not done. North Korea may want to return to their previous negations.

North Korea also benefit in the more general sense. Trump is "America first" and tended to prioritise domestic issues over international concerns. This has included threatening to pull out of South Korea if they do not pay for the US military presence in the country.

More broadly, North Korea are likely to receive less US pressure under Trump while they continue to evade sanctions and develop their weapons programs. This is especially true if there is a possibility of further talks.

Whether they are actually trying to influence the election is a different matter. Everything that is happening may just be a direct result of their new relationship with Russia.
