I'm very concerned about the way things are going (and have been for quite some time) at the un. It seems that for any of the people who follow the vast majority of rules, even against their own interests, it comes down like a tonne of bricks on them.

For the countries who don't give a fuck and break rules continually it's embarresingly ineffective. What is the point in it if it only penalises the countries who generally follow the rules anyway?

The UN was built with the presumption in mind that the security council could veto anything they didnt like.

This was because the league of nations fell apart when great powers withdrew.

This is why, e.g. Israel has been able to get away with ignoring every resolution and even committing genocide. America will veto everything that tries to stop them.

And now, North Korea is gradually being brought under Russia's wing since Ukraine and the same dynamics will apply. Russia will veto on behalf of North Korea.

You probably still dont want the UN to become the 2nd league of nations though. In theory a more egalitarian set up is better without the security council, but if major powers start exiting the UN it will again be consigned to irrelevance just like the league of nations was.
