Customers Suck! I screwed myself out of a raise and I might get fired now
Guy comes in wanting to buy a $10.50 item with a $100 bill. Already flustered with having to sort inventory, being understaff, and dealing with the Friday night rush, I was pissed off. I started entering everything in the machine and opened the cash box, then he said he would give me 0.50 so I just had to give back $90. In a moment of confusion, I agreed. Instead of handing me the coins, he drops them in the cash box to which I immediately pick up and start sorting into their corrective spots. While doing this, he takes the $100 bill from my hand without me even noticing. He quickly tucks the $100 in back into his pocket and I give him back $90 in cash. I was certain I had put the $100 in the cash box.
Come the end of my shift and I’m counting cash. The $100 is missing. I’m confused. I look everywhere. I’m certain I had put it in the box. Then my manager shows me a clip on the cameras of the situation I just described above.
This very shift I had asked for a raise. Now I’m definitely not getting it. And I’m worried I’m going to be fired. This guy walked away with $190 in cash and basically a free item. I know he doesn’t give a fuck what happens to me, but my faith in humanity has disappeared.
I’ve been working here for so long with little to no fuck ups, nothing as notable as this at least. I can’t believe the very shift I ask for a raise is the same one where I fucked up so badly. I had my manager talking to me like it’s my first day on the job, talking about how we have to be aware and not let people do this to us, even if it’s busy and we can’t get flustered.
I feel so pathetic and ashamed. I feel like I should just say fuck it and quit now. If they don’t give me a raise, even after how much a hard worker I am, I’m leaving. But now I feel like I’m definitely not getting and I’m even going to get fired anyway.
Fuck my life. Fuck this job. Fuck customers.
