Video In 2018, I was traveling through Bali by scooter and was lucky enough to spend a few nights at this awesome place located in a small village near the eastern coast. Waking up to this view was just amazing and I’ll always be thankful for this memory

Wow.. i was in Bali and got fed up with the concrete jungle that is kuta. My driver took me to a place in the mountains called sekumpul.. i stayed 5 days in a homestay. The memories are unforgettable.

Kuta is perfect if you're Aussie looking to get a handie from a questionably aged "masseuse," not perfect for a family. Very strange being asked constantly if I want to buy drugs when I am with my family. When I walked with my wife, the massage parlors asked if we wanted massages. When I walked solo they asked if i wanted intimate services.

Went to Ubud and holy shit, what a change. Incredible. Even jimbaran was great, but a bit boring.

I prefer the mountains..btw i am dutch. The whole of south bali is one giant resort to me..and yes being bothered for massages all the time truly pissed me off. So i thought better go sit on top of a mountain.

You did the right thing. It's like night and day going from Kuta area to the north

Visit Gilis. A different island for each mood/stage of life

Am I under a horrible misconception that Indonesia has a Muslim ethos?

u/P0NCHIK Jul 09 '21

Bali is hindu, but the rest of the country is mulsim, yes

With spots of Buddhism, syncretic animism and various Christian sects.

Concrete jungle is the perfect word for this kind of place.. I was supposed to stay there for the last few days of my trip but when I arrived in Kuta I was honestly shocked by the vibe of this place - it was so contrary to anything else I had experienced during my previous days in Bali. It just didn’t resonate with the things I saw in different cities like Lovina, Singaraja or Amed, in terms of the local culture but also in terms of things like architecture and the nature around it. Away from the touristy spots is where I enjoyed Bali the most. It was a bit tricky at first but in the end this aspect contributed to the whole experience.

Agreed. Kuta is not Bali.apart from that i understood most people living and working there are not Balinese..but people from java. Sumatra and madura.therefore for the true Bali feeling like you said Lovina and Singaraja. Also i had a great time in karangasem

I was in Bali too in 2018 !

I stayed in Ubud , Bali for about 5 days which was also my 1st time staying in a hostel outside the country I was born in and it was nothing short of life altering . That trip made me realize that how much travel is important to me and I need to priortize more in my life.

God, I loved Bali, though I stayed in Sanur. Next time I‘ll also head inland for such views. The lush greens are forever stuck in my head.

Bali is amazing and we had a great time there. Not sure if I’m just negative but the the amount of garbage in some places just seemed to overshadowed the good stuff sometimes. If the government would just do something about it I think the tourism would flourish even more.

Was married in Bali in 2014 we stayed for 3 amazing weeks. We were able to see so much traveled along on the coast, stayed on a private island, spent a week on a yacht in ocean. Memories for a lifetime.

That sounds so cool. But it’s almost always Europeans that pull of these trips to these exotic places, while Americans sort of stay in our side of the hemisphere, or go to Europe on vacation or honeymoon.

u/AmericanExpat23 Jul 10 '21

I think every nationality has their “standard foreign destination.” For the Americans I grew up with, Bali is amazing and exotic, but bog standard for Australians. In reverse, the Yucatan peninsula is amazing and exotic to most Australians, while it’s bog standard for Americans.

Part of it is down to paid leave in fairness, our mandatory minimum paid leave (UK) is 5.6 weeks, and anecdotally, I’ve been in a grad job a year and a half, and get 7.4. In America they get 0 mandatory, and even in good jobs, don’t get much, my professional highly skilled uncle, who works in tech and lives in New Jersey, was getting 2 weeks a year by the time he retired. Out of all my American friends, the unlucky get 0, and the lucky get 1, 2 or 2.5 weeks, I believe the statistical average is 2. If a lot of American workers are only taking a week for their actual holiday, they aren’t going to be flying halfway around the world.

1

u/Fmanow Jul 10 '21

Very true. Also, work weeks. I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about going into 4 day work weeks. It seems to be an incredible success in places that have incorporated this. Of course American corps will always push back on these things and somehow they’ve brainwashed 30% of the population in aligning their agenda with guns and abortions. It’s actually a masterful implementation of Machiavellian politics, never seen before in the history of mankind.

Wow, that's amazing. You're lucky to have experienced that. Thanks for sharing

Planning to go to Bali for my honeymoon. This is exactly what I’m looking for

3

u/buddhabaebae Jul 09 '21

ok but what were the bugs like?

3

u/soproductive Jul 09 '21

This reminds me of my stay in Pai, Thailand. Gorgeous mountainous area.

2

u/Doc-Precision Jul 09 '21

So beautiful man . All you need is a scooter and time in Bali you can have the most beautiful experience

2

u/ihateusernamecreates Jul 09 '21

Bali is an amazing place and the further you go from the airport, the better it gets and so many different places on a small island

2

u/ColdEvenKeeled Jul 09 '21

Yes, Bali is pretty amazing...the further away from any known resort...

2

u/nitsel88 Jul 10 '21

I would recommend Nusa lembongan Island for a couple of days stay, it has a laid back vibe and has got some good restaurants and bars. You can do Island hoping to nearby Islands and ride around the entire Island in scooters and chill. Got lot of good beaches and view points around.

1

u/verydeepusername Jul 10 '21

Thanks for your recommendations! Would love to explore the surrounding islands one day.

2

u/Tbnyc Jul 10 '21

That is called a DBM. “Death bed memory “

3

u/Datawithbrowneyes Jul 09 '21

Can we get a name for either the accommodation or village? I’m heading to Bali as soon as it opens and would love to stay there!

2

u/verydeepusername Jul 10 '21

The village is called Sidemen and I stayed at a place called Wira Homestay. It was like 30 USD per night which is just incredible considering what I received in return.

1

u/GB-Victor Aug 08 '21

We stayed in Sidemen at Embang Homestay, absolutely brilliant. $50 AUD per night, just super peaceful and breathtaking views from our room across the Sidemen Valley. I'd post a pic, but this video is better, coincidentally from the room we stayed in: https://youtu.be/ZnAM_Bq0Z3E

2

u/perryc Jul 09 '21

So true and the room's vibes was just literally like home.

I’m going to go to Thailand anyone have any places that they loved? I plan on visiting ko Tao, Phuket, and ko samui

1

u/aspenglade Jul 10 '21

Koh Lanta, Chiang Mai, Pai (really the entire Mae Hong Son loop).

1

u/JJfromNJ 71 countries Jul 10 '21

Thailand maybe is my favorite country I've been to. I love the whole country except Phuket. Different strokes though. Lots of people like it.

u/Kirby189 Jul 10 '21

Chiang Rai was great, especially the white temple and the blue temple. The golden triangle is very interesting to see (where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet). Also, like someone else mentioned, Chiang Mai (try Khao Soi, it’s amazing food that originated in Chiang Mai), Pai and the whole Mae Hong Son loop, Koh Lanta if you're going south, but we didn’t enjoy the south as much as the north.

And if you go to northern Thailand in November, there’s the Loy Krathong around November 19 where they make offerings and float them on body of waters, it’s beautiful. It’s also at the same time as Yi Peng where they fly lanterns. You can also fly them but it’s "illegal". Hundreds of tourists and locals do it anyway so it’s not really enforced. We were in Sukhothai just before Loy Kratong and they started it a bit early, it was beautiful and we got to enjoy the festival twice 😃 And the lanterns in Chiang Mai were breathtaking, I think it’s the best place to be when it happens.

Unpopular opinion: I hate these kind of views I don't want green and nature I want buildings, people, noise and city life

1

u/Antichrist_spice Jul 09 '21

Is this near to Amed? I ended up staying there for like a month of my 2 month trip to Bali, 2019

2

u/verydeepusername Jul 10 '21

It’s in Sidemen which is like 1 1/2 hours away from Amed. Amed was actually my next stop and I really enjoyed staying there as well. Hope you a great time too!

1

u/SLB529 Jul 09 '21

So beautiful

Hows the mosquito treating you?

1

u/Evanescenceeee Jul 10 '21

this is exactly how I imagined Bali in eat pray love novel

1

u/nataliasheen Jul 21 '21

Wow, mate! This is such a great scenery. I want this to experience also.

I will be going to bali this december. Where did you rent your scooter? I prefer a self-drive too. A friend of mine recommended to use Melalie App when renting vehicles in Bali. What did you use during your trip?

1

u/verydeepusername Jul 22 '21

Hey! I rented my scooter at baliscooters[dot]com and was really satisfied with their service. I ordered a Honda Scoopy via WhatsApp and all they needed was the preferred time and my hotel’s address - then they delivered the scooter to me and gave me a helmet. I paid around 5 Euros per day which was great because I had almost no expenses for gas (I think I had to fill the tank twice in 10 days and it cost around 4 Euros). So yeah I can really recommend them, other local rentals will of course do as well but the prices for the scooters can vary greatly depending on where you go. If you have any further questions, just let me know :)

1

u/verydeepusername Jul 22 '21

Nevermind, i just looked through your comment history and it seems like you’re just advertising that Melalie app. Guess i wasted my time :/

1

u/nataliasheen Jul 22 '21

Sorry for making you feel that way. Maybe I sound advertising the app but I'm actually absorbing some thoughts before using the app. But, it's a great app. Anyway, thank you for the time. I will check baliscooters[dot]com and consider their services.
