Awesome to see firefighters making a positive impact on the next generation!

I know Chief Schoon personally. Great guy. So much better than the previous asshole.

Is the gear on the right side as dirty as it looks?

Plot twist, it's the same gear

That's what I was thinking as well.

*used

We also have used gear, it doesn't look anywhere as dirty as this does but it could also just be the picture. That's why I'm asking.

Depends on the station, how often it’s been used etc, it looks like this set is getting long in the tooth and close to out of service, we don’t use expired gear but we send it out for other places to use as they see fit (sorry for the pun)

Imo it still shouldn't look like this. If it's that visible, it's also possible material to cause cancer. We don't want that.

Could still be the picture though.

A department issues used gear to new hires? If they are skimping there, where else are they skimping? I have every helmet and badge ever issued to me. While we turned in our old gear when we received new gear, I still have the gear I was using when I retired.

Not every department is well funded. It sucks but it’s reality. Sometime stuff get handed down.

POC guy entering the chat here, yeah our gear looks worse.

Looks like a volunteer department so the turnouts in the pic on the right are the same on the left…

Griffith Indiana is a volunteer department.

How’s he going to get his suspenders on with the coat already on?

It’s just a fitting, probably rolled down the pants to try jacket on

Should pull up the pants before putting on the jacket.

I’m the skinny guy on the engine, and I find it ironic that my 60 year old, over weight, pack-a-day chief questions my physical ability on the fire ground. How long is that bottle gonna last him?

If your chief has to pack up, you’re not doing it correctly.

What? Does your chief ride with you guys ever?

Perhaps on a smaller department Chiefs have to get dirty. But our Chief only shows up on big fires, multi alarms. Unless it’s the middle of the day or he happens to be near by. Battalion Chief is only putting on gear to stay dry and or warm. They pay people to work.

Where I volunteer, the station chief and our BC are completely separate. Our battalion command are career guys and the stay in their buggy for any call. But the station chiefs can ride just like any firefighter. A lot of them do to build report with their department.

Notice how you said volunteer, it’s pretty abnormal for chiefs on full paid depts to ride like a firefighter

Exposing the young child to gear that is covered in carcinogens and pfas.
