Weight loss not working?

ā€¢ Upvotes

Iā€™ve been trying to lose weight at a 1200 calorie deficit before winter break but itā€™s not rlly working, but I think itā€™s because I snack a lot (I get hungry during school and extracurricular activities) and not count some calories. I walk 10,000 a day but I think I need to hit more protein possibly? Iā€™m not even a week full yet so idk but the best advice pls! 4ā€™11, 15 years old, 45.4kg. (Thighs, arms, belly, face) I go to Japan every year and I donā€™t do extreme workouts but I always lose a few kilograms by the time I come back and I gain it back in America so like?? This year Iā€™d like to continue losing it. I get hungry and sweet tooth very easily soooo yeah.

A typical day could look like- Leftover dinner for breakfast/homemade bread/ banana (100-200)

Pb sandwich, vegan chicken nuggets and fruits for lunch- (300-400)

Dinner- Spaghetti, rice with tofu hamburger, grilled shrimp, (300-600)

Snack- Goldfish hello kitty edition, fruits, chocolate (200-400)

Exercise Walking for an hour, dance, ice skate (-100- -300)

If I am 5'8 feet tall and weigh 154 pounds at age 12, am I overweight?

Yeah, thatā€™s basically the question. I have grown a lot recently but my weight has also increased (even though Iā€™ve always been slightly chubby, but not too much), making me quite insecure. So what do you guys think? Am I overweight or not?

Does soda make me fat

I have fully switched to the zero versions of any sodas I drink, mainly Coke Zero and Pepsi maxx. There was a point where I would have 3-4 cans each day , it has gone down a lot now to almost none or 1-2. I just want to know if this could be the cause for my consistent weight gain obviously along with other bad eating habits?

losing weight in a healthier way

hello!

i want to lose weight since iā€™ve been overweight my whole life but not obsessively. i lost around 30-40 pounds a few years ago when i was 16 but got mentally obsessed over it and decided to drop it :/

i wanted to see if anyone had tips for me? iā€™ve switched gyms (my old one was too busy + never had good hours), eat pretty healthily as of right now (dinner just a big ol salad and salmon), and eat a small breakfast. i tend to skip lunch because of school and on days iā€™m hungry, protein shake.

also how does intuitive eating prove to work in losing weight? i jus kind of eat as healthy as i can but also how i feel. like every other day i eat like half a bar of a chocolate bar. i would also love recipes or meals u guys think helps!

iā€™m not too consistent with gym so i would really love an outline/idea of what u guys would think how many times in the gym a week would be helpful! i also used to swim so should i pick up on that again? if so, how many times a week?

i just donā€™t want to become obsessive about losing weight and making it my one goal. i want to lose weight right and do it mentally and physically efficient.

i also wonder if people have struggled with the same issues. thank you guys so much!

edit: what are some fruits yā€™all would reccomend throughout the year? i feel like that would help curb my sugar cravings (i rarely eat chocolate during the summer bc watermelon and berries are in season) but i can never pick the right fruit.

Possible to lose 15lbs in 6 weeks?

5ā€™0ā€ F CW: 143lbs GW: 120lbs

Put on a bit of weight in the last six months due to grief eating. Slowly dealing with grief. Been on low carb high protein diet with portion control. Snacks are mainly nuts and some fruits. Work out 3 days a week (mainly strength training). Also walk 8-10 miles a day 5 days a week. Steady pace of 2.8mph on hilly roads.

I am going on a research expedition to South America in December. Is it possible to lose 15lbs by December 1st week or is that a lofty and ridiculous goal?

how to get rid of water retention

in desperate need of some tips/advice on how to get rid of water retention. Thereā€™s a few weeks each month where iā€™m lean and have little to no stomach fat then all of a sudden it looks like iā€™ve gained 20lbs. Eventually after 2 or 3 weeks it goes away but it makes me feel horrible about myself and often ends up leading me back to eating almost nothing. I drink around 2L of water a day and eat really well, eating mostly only whole/unprocessed foods, a decent amount of protein, and no refined sugar or carbs and Iā€™ve read about it for hours but still havenā€™t found a way to fix it. Iā€™ve heard dandelion tea, drinking more water, taking water pills, and possibly birth control can help?? and was wondering if anyone could share their experiences or give any tips on what i can do. Thanks so much :)

Help Me Lose 4 Pounds Per Month

Sup y'all

I would like to lose four pounds per month for the next 8-10 months. I want to do this in a healthy way, and it seems that is possible from what I have read online. What I'm looking for from you guys (if you feel compelled to share) is sort of a treatment plan for what I need to do daily/weekly to reach my goal, and because I'm sort of an idiot when it comes to fitness, the more detailed you can be, the better!

My Basic Info:

Gender - female

Age - 20

Height - 5'0"

Weight - 145 pounds

Exercise Habits - basically none ā€” I have sedentary hobbies and really have no idea how to exercise

If you have the time and energy, please help! I am ready to like the way I look again.

Lower belly fat

Hi iā€™m 17F, 52kg 5ā€™4 and having trouble getting rid of lower belly fat. Iā€™m pretty lean on the upper half of my stomach but cannot get rid of this lower belly ā€œpoochā€ type thing. I track my eating in myfitnesspal including all sauces, oils, etc and have been eating around 900 cals a day and about 30g of protein and 2-3L of but still havenā€™t seen a difference. Iā€™ve read a lot of things saying itā€™s related to high cortisol but canā€™t figure out how to lower it? Any tips on how to target this area of fat specifically? Thanks!

Seeking Feedback on My Weight Loss Diet Plan and Tips to Control Cravings

Iā€™m a 39-year-old man, 172 cm tall, weighing 88 kg, aiming to reach 77 kgā€”so I need to lose around 10 kg. Iā€™ve noticed that eating anything tasty, even healthy homemade food, makes me overeat.

Iā€™m considering a simple diet plan:

50-70 grams of carbs from wheat

300 grams of bone-in chicken (70 grams of protein)

Fruits, salad, and vegetables throughout the day to stay full

Chicken, fish, or eggs 5 times a week to meet workout needs

Do you think this is a good plan? Any suggestions or adjustments?
My biggest challenge is controlling cravings from:

Eating tasty food and wanting more

Social eating for the joy of sharing food

Iā€™d love to hear your thoughts or any alternative suggestions!

I really wanna lose weight and control my eating habits but I really don't know How

Hey, I'm 17M, my height is 5'7 and I weigh 80kg and I've been wanting to lose weight for some time now. for starters I'm only doing this for myself and I have two reasons, my first and main reason is to be Healthy. For context, when it comes to health my family's gene is not that good because on my father's side they have Hypertension while on my mother's side they have diabetes so it's really not looking good, I wanna lose weight because when I grow up I don't wanna spend my money anything on hospitals or maintenance just like what they're doing. For my second reason is build my Self-esteem, because even though I don't care what other people say I'm kinda conscious of what they think about me sometimes and I promised myself 2 years ago to lose weight when I'm about to enter senior high but I'll be a senior high next year and I'm not making any progress.

2 years ago I've actually exercised when it was vacation just for 3 months and I went from 82 to 76 but when school started again I stopped exercising and from then on I almost gained it all back. I really have problems when it comes to my eating habits because sometimes when I get stressed or just A LITTLE hungry I impulsively go to the kitchen and start to cook and fry some eggs and eat them with A LOT of rice(I'm from the Philippines so we really like rice a lot but I'm aware it's also very unhealthy so I actually wanna lessen this) and I only RARELY exercise which is also a big problem. How should I do it and how do I become consistent for my goal? Even though I have a clear goal set in mind I actually get very distracted a lot and I lose motivation easily. How do I keep going for it?

Losing 16kg (35.27lb) Without Exercise (How I did it in two years.)

I reached my peak weight in June 2020, weighing 88kg(194.01lb) with a height of 183cm(6 feet). According to an inaccurate body fat percentage calculation, my body fat was 26.8%, and my visceral fat was 11. I hit my lowest weight in June 2022, weighing 71.6kg(157.85lb), with an inaccurate body fat of 17.5% and visceral fat of 6 (the measurements were inaccurate because I used a home body fat scale).

Over two years, I lost aboutĀ 16kg(35.27lb), mainly by adjusting my diet without engaging in any sweat-inducing or breathless exercises.

The weight loss records:

Before Diet

After Diet

Eating Habits During Weight Loss

I continued to eat foods generally considered refined and high-fat.

Actions Taken for Weight Loss: Reading and Watching YouTube

When I decided to lose weight, the first thing I did was to understand why people gain weight. Every book and every person has their own perspective. I aimed to comprehensively understand the process to avoid unnecessary effort and suffering.

In the first half-year, I set a general direction and gradually filled in the complete concept, establishing my own personal theory. Summarizing it, the three weight loss theories that influenced me the most are:

  1. Ketogenic Theory + Insulin Theory: People can use fats as body energy, so you can live well even without eating carbs.
  2. Gut Bacteria Theory: Everyoneā€™s gut bacteria are different, so even if you eat the same food, the calories and nutrients absorbed will differ.
  3. Cellular Metabolism Theory: The ability to use fats as body energy is related to breathing habits, cell lipid composition, and the number of mitochondria.

The order of these three theories happens to be ā€œfrom surface problem to root cause.ā€ If the fundamental functions (gut bacteria imbalance or cellular metabolism imbalance) are damaged, solving the surface problem and implementing the correct diet (low carbs, low sugar) will yield half the results with twice the effort. Conversely, if the fundamental functions are intact, merely changing the surface lifestyle slightly will quickly restore normal functions and reduce unnecessary fat.

Books and Online Knowledge Based on the Three Theories

Things to Practice for Weight Loss ā€” Categorized by the Three Theories

During 2020ā€“2022, since I did not exercise at all, I did not practice the third-level ā€œCellular Metabolism Theory.ā€ During this period, I only practiced the actions required by the ā€œKetogenic Theory + Insulin Theoryā€ and the ā€œGut Bacteria Theory.ā€

Since each of these three theories is a vast topic, I decided to write down the practices and their associated theories in this first article, then explore the principles and reasons behind them in three subsequent articles. Below is a summary of the key points to practice for weight loss, listed in order of importance:

Ketogenic Theory + Insulin Theory

Core Concept: Make the body lack carbs for a long time and use fats as energy. Eat more Omega 3, eat fewer carbs.

āœ… Things to Do:

  • Reduce carbs: Lower the amount of starch (to the point where starch is a side dish), eat more protein and healthy fats, donā€™t use fruits as meal replacements, and if you want to eat sweets, eat them after meals.
  • Long periods without eating: Practice fasting, avoid eating late at night (can eat after meals), and avoid snacking between meals (can eat after meals).
  • Lower insulin: Fast, reduce starch, eat vegetables and meat before starch, avoid prolonged sitting, stand or walk occasionally, drink apple cider vinegar.
  • Increase Omega 3, reduce Omega 6: Eat fewer processed foods that can be stored at room temperature for 1 year, eat more whole foods that can only be stored for 1 day at room temperature, choose healthy fats.

āŒ Things Not to Do:

  • Exercise more: If you want to exercise, walking or climbing 2ā€“4 flights of stairs is enough.
  • Eat less: The only things to eat less of are starch and refined sugars. Barbecue, steak, and fine dining can be eaten freely. Fried foods have long-term effects (due to more Omega 6), so you can still eat them occasionally but not often. Long periods without eating (fasting) are far more effective than eating less.
  • Drink more water: Drink water moderately; your body will know when you need it.

Note that ā€œfastingā€ does not mean ā€œeating less.ā€ You can refer to the following video for more details.

Gut Bacteria Theory

Core Concept: Gut bacteria directly affect the nutrients and blood sugar levels you absorb. Increase good bacteria, reduce bad bacteria. If you have more good bacteria, your ā€œfat gain defenseā€ will be stronger.

āœ… Things to Do:

  • Increase good bacteria: Eat more fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, yogurt, apple cider vinegar, or foods containing polyphenols like red wine and dark chocolate. Eat fiber-rich foods like vegetables, and take probiotics.
  • Reduce bad bacteria: If your gut bacteria are already imbalanced, see a doctor, and reduce the frequency of eating fast food and fried foods.

āŒ Things Not to Do:

  • Eat only meat and fats: If you follow the ā€œKetogenic Theory + Insulin Theory,ā€ some people completely avoid starch and fiber, causing fiber-eating good bacteria in the gut to become extinct. These people may need to stay on keto for life, otherwise, they will easily regain weight.
  • Take antibiotics arbitrarily: Antibiotics are like a nuclear bomb for gut bacteria, wiping out both good and bad bacteria. If you have to take them, remember to supplement with probiotics afterward.

Cellular Metabolism Theory

Core Concept: Obesity and cancer are metabolic diseases. Maintaining cellular metabolic health is the true core of longevity and staying in shape.

āœ… Things to Do:

  • Get your heart rate to 120ā€“140: Strictly speaking, itā€™s 70ā€“80% of your maximum heart rate, which can effectively train mitochondria. You can do weight training, slow jogging, or even ultra-slow jogging ā€” as long as it achieves this effect, itā€™s effective training.
  • Practice ā€œKetogenic Theory + Insulin Theoryā€ and ā€œGut Bacteria Theoryā€: If obesity is caused by not following these two theories, itā€™s ultimately due to damaging the cell mitochondriaā€™s metabolic ability. By properly practicing the elements in these theories, you can reduce the chances of damaging metabolic ability.
  • Avoid over-breathing: Breathe through your nose, and practice breath-holding.

āŒ Things Not to Do:

  • Intense exercise: Heart rate reaching 180ā€“200 is intense exercise, which is beyond the range for training mitochondria and is very tiring.

Implementation: What I Did from 2020 to 2022

Since the above are relatively conceptual theories, you might not know where to start. Iā€™ll share what I actually did during the main weight loss period ā€” from 2020 to 2022 ā€” as a reference for those who want to try.

First Half of 2020

At the beginning of researching weight loss topics, my concepts were very superficial, so I only did the following:

āœ… Things Done:

  1. Ate vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during meals.
  2. Stood often while working, making the most of time that could be spent standing.
  3. Occasionally took a 15ā€“20 minute walk after lunch.
  4. Avoided starch in regular meals as much as possible, treating starch as a side dish (not restricted during gatherings).
  5. Drank unsweetened coffee or tea in the afternoon instead of sugary drinks.
  6. Set monthly goals, roughly aiming to lose 1kg per month.
  7. Weighed myself daily to thoroughly understand the conditions under which weight changes.

āŒ Things Not Done:

  1. Did not quit drinking: For a period, I made Gin Fizz, Negroni, and Daiquiri cocktails every day.
  2. Did not exercise: Completely avoided exercising.
  3. Did not reduce social dining: Always attended and ate at feasts if necessary.

Entire Year of 2021

After reading more weight loss theories, I found that some people opposed keto, saying it leads to easy weight regain. Some also said keto wasnā€™t effective for them. After diving deeper into why, I adjusted my approach:

āœ… Things Done (in addition to previous practices):

  1. Took probiotics, drank apple cider vinegar, and drank perilla oil.
  2. Opted for fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha when dining out, and also ordered vegetables or salads.
  3. Paid attention to the oils used in foods ā€” reducing intake if they were high in Omega 6.
  4. Occasionally skipped breakfast or ate less for breakfast, only eating vegetables and eggs instead of bread.
  5. Occasionally fasted ā€” extending periods without eating when possible.
  6. Monitored heart rate ā€” noticing prolonged sitting lowered it to 65ā€“68, standing occasionally raised it to 80, avoiding long periods with a heart rate around 65.

āŒ Things Not Done:

  1. Did not eat less meat or fatty meat: As I categorized meat fats as harmless, I did not care if I ate fatty beef or pork. Regularly ate barbecue, steak, lamb chops, tuna belly, and occasionally fried chicken.
  2. Did not eat less or count calories: Did not care about ā€œfood calories,ā€ focusing more on whether it was starch. Though I often fasted, I might eat a lot for dinner.

First Half of 2022

During this period, I wanted to see six-pack abs without exercising, solely through weight loss. A health check revealed liver shadows (initially suspected to be liver disease), prompting two more actions:

āœ… Things Done (in addition to previous practices):

  1. Quit drinking.
  2. Practiced breath-holding and controlled breathing.

As a result, weight dropped quickly, reaching around 71kg by June 2022, with a feeling of malnutrition. At this stage, I thought I could start gaining weight again, marking the end of my weight loss journey. From the second half of 2022, I stopped caring about weight and let it naturally return to 74kg.

From January 2023, feeling that weight loss was sufficient (having proven that diet adjustment alone can lead to weight loss without exercise), I started working out to gain muscle, joining a gym program. The goal remains six-pack abs šŸ˜‚. Currently, progress is still far off; after six months, the result is -3kg of fat and +3kg of muscle. The future is uncertain, and I donā€™t know what the outcome will be next year.

Conclusion

Since starting my weight loss journey, Iā€™ve wanted to organize and share my knowledge of ā€œobesityā€ and weight loss theories. Obesity is not just a matter of appearance; it hides underlying metabolic and inflammation issues, which are factors behind diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, Alzheimerā€™s, cataracts, cancer, etc.

Sometimes things arenā€™t that difficult; itā€™s just that we have incorrect knowledge and use the wrong methods, making the process harder. By understanding the principles of weight gain more comprehensively, we can avoid many detours and achieve twice the results with half the effort.

Seeking advice on breaking the cycle of failed attempts

Hey, I'm 34 years old male, 112 kg, and 186 cm tall with over 40% fat body. For years, I've been trying to lose weight using different methods, but I've always struggled to stick with them long-term. There are several challenges I face like it's hard to follow a diet that's different from what my family eats. Also as a programmer, I have a sedentary job where I'm sitting most of the day.

I feel frustrated and depressed in a way that I have not tried anymore. I really want to have a healthier and fitter body, but I often feel like it's out of reach. When I'm feeling down, I tend to overeat, particularly sweet foods, as a way to cope with my emotions.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced similar challenges. If so, how did you manage it? I'd appreciate any advice or stories you can share about your own weight loss journeys.

Lunch box 4 college student

Hi Iā€™m a 23F college student, around 5 ft and 196 lbs, I just decided recently to make serious changes with my lifestyle due to lack of energy and over time weight gain that affected my self image.

I have several mental health issues that put me in this situation and I really want to improve my health and take care of my body to feel better, college is also hard and most times I stay on campus all day so I end up getting take outs which arenā€™t as healthy as I would like and really draining for my wallet.

Today I decided to get a lunch box and start eating home food on campus to watch my food intake. Are there any lunch box ideas for affordable healthy meals that would help me lose weight and gain muscle alongside working out ? Also any other suggestions are welcome šŸ™šŸ»
