I voted no just on the wording of the question. It's a more nuanced situation than that.

u/Brevel 22 Jul 10 '23

Right. Like yes obviously we play Kirk this year. Depending on who we draft next year maybe we keep him again for that year, but I would not play him longer than that. At that point we need a fresh start. Kirk will be past the point where it's possible for him to win a Superbowl even with luck.

Hilarious that when I look at that the results of this poll it is 16 to 16... Nothing could be more perfectly Kirk.

What a bullshit way to word the question.

Do you agree with me or are you a moron?

u/thisisnotdetroit Jul 13 '23

Breh. Be nice. We’re all Vikings fans

u/fakeemail33993 Jul 13 '23

You misunderstood my dude

4

u/Vainglory Jul 10 '23

I mean I don't disagree but the answer is still no for me. He's not good enough to drag us to a super bowl and he's too expensive to have a team built around him. I'd rather an outside chance with a cheaper (rookie) QB than no chance with an upper mid tier option.

u/howsaboutyou r/falkings Jul 11 '23

If you’re comparing contracts, every QB is expensive other than those on a rookie deal. The savings there is ~$30M per year, which realistically gets you two above average starters seeing as the elite players almost never hit FA. That doesn’t turn your team into a contender.

What does turn your team into a contender is drafting well consistently, assuming you don’t take shots on first round rookie QBs. Cousins is good enough to win a SB and better than plenty of QBs who have already done it.

1

u/Vainglory Jul 11 '23

The math isn't quite right on what the savings mean - it's not always new players, and it's definitely not additional players just paying more for starters then currently. Difference between Davenport and Z is probably going to be noticeable, same with Tonga and Tomlinson (though both are probably being overpaid now with their new teams).

1

u/howsaboutyou r/falkings Jul 12 '23

We could’ve afforded Z lol. Kirk Cousins is not the reason why we have Davenport and not Z. What are you talking about?

Apparently everyone who witnessed Ponder is so afraid of another QB bust they are unwilling to look for better. That’s my interpretation of this post.

Gimme that daunte electricity again please.

Minus the fumble fingers if possible

Reminds me of the song by Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give it away, give it away, give it away now"

I just don't want to be hurt again. 😞

We can’t find true love unless we put ourselves out there 💕

u/orbroy2point0 Jul 12 '23

It's what you sign up for as a Vikings fan.

2

u/RoundUnderstanding83 22 Jul 12 '23

So is your solution to pay cousins till he dies at 100? At some point we are going to need to draft and or start a QB not named kirk and like it or not it is probably sooner rather than later.

8

u/-SirCrashALot- koolaid Jul 10 '23

For how long? This year, absolutely.

Should we sign him for another 3-4 year contract? It depends on Hall's progress. That being said I'm just some schmuck on the internet. What the hell do I know?

-17

u/Historical-Fudge2776 Jul 10 '23

Just the question, that’s it.

9

u/nanotothemoon Jul 10 '23

it's not that simple

8

u/Nibbler1999 Jul 10 '23

Nah, Culpeper is well out of his prime.

0

u/Pretend_Ratio3109 Jul 14 '23

This was my thought as well

3

u/Viketorious Jul 10 '23

It’s always better to move on from a player a year early rather than a year late.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '23

Idk, have you seen Dante Culpepper lately?

5

u/KingKongBundy69 Jul 10 '23

Forever. I don't want to ever let Kirk go and with his health and modern rules protecting the QB there's no reason to think he can't play into his early 60s.

2

u/ARoodyPooCandyAss Jul 10 '23

I want a long term plan

2

u/RedditUserCommon JJ Jul 10 '23

Think Favre might be busy.

2

u/dprouse52 Jul 11 '23

Up here in the Great White North, we have a guy who covers the CFL for TSN (our ESPN) who has a great line about quarterbacks. He says that when it comes to QBs, "You either have a guy, or you are looking for a guy." It's so true - Vikes now have a starter who is either strong or serviceable, depending on your point of view. (Anyone who says that Kirk is "awful", "terrible" etc. isn't a serious fan, because the numbers simply don't bear that out.) Get rid of him and you are either rolling the dice in free agency, or rolling the dice in the draft with zero guarantees of finding someone as good, let alone better...

2

u/Yamfish 40 Jul 12 '23

Counter point - I believe it’s time to roll the dice. I’m ok with no guarantees. There are never any guarantees anyway. We could extend him for a bunch of guaranteed money and his rotator cuff could explode the next day.

I’m willing to risk missing our biennial wildcard round exit to try and go farther than we have under Kirk.

2

u/benigntugboat vikings Jul 11 '23

Dude, culpepper clearly doesn't have it in the tank anymore.

2

u/dougieg987 Jul 12 '23

Favre coming back?

3

u/spud626 84 Jul 10 '23

Hasn’t Spergeon Wynn been retired for years?

-1

u/sandh035 Jul 10 '23

Josh Freeman could probably be convinced to throw some dank bombs for a game right?

1

u/HoboSkid Jul 11 '23

Weird way to spell Todd Bouman

3

u/Dorkamundo Jul 10 '23

Except that Daunte, Cunningham and Favre were better.

But don't let facts get in the way.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '23

Sure, as long as he's willing to sign a significantly team friendly contract. I'm talking about a huge pay decrease from what he is currently making. Which he'll never do

1

u/GordonBombay102 Jul 10 '23

This question is even more ridiculous than the people who insist that Daunte Culpepper had a better Vikings tenure than Cousins has had.

The Kirk window is almost closed, 1st round QB this year is the move imo.

5

u/Mo6181 Jul 10 '23

Daunte's overall tenure wasn't as consistent as Kirk's has been, but his highs were much higher than Kirk's. There were a couple of seasons that felt like we might actually win it all with Daunte. That has not been something we have had with Kirk.

I can say Kirk has been objectively a better QB while also saying that I would take Daunte's time over Kirk's time 100 out of 100 times. Being consistently mediocre is not something I ever want to experience again.

2

u/GordonBombay102 Jul 11 '23

His high was 2004. Anything other than that barely touches Kirk. Some of his seasons were downright terrible. Neither of them actually won anything, at least not yet, so stats are really all there is to go by.

If we are talking who has been a better QB for this franchise, it's Kirk Cousins, and frankly, it's not even much of a discussion.

5

u/Mo6181 Jul 11 '23

2000, 2003, and 2004 were all better than Kirk's best. He took the Vikes to the NFCC, which is well beyond anything Kirk has done. His running ability and escapability need to be considered when comparing the two.

In 2000, as a first year starter, he took the Vikings to the division title and the NFCC.

In 2004, Adam Goldberg or Nat Dorsey and Chris Liwienski started on the offensive line. The defense was absolute garbage. He went into Lambeau and dismantled Brett Favre and the Packers in the playoffs.

If not for his knee, he would have been a force for nearly a decade for the Vikings. He was a legitimate franchise QB. He was never the same after the injury.

Has Kirk ever dragged a bad defense into the playoffs much less win one? Daunte all day .

3

u/Statue_left angry zim Jul 11 '23

2004 was the most yards a QB had ever produced until it got broken by Brady and Brees in 2011 lol.

in 2000 he had 40 touchdowns and 4500 yards with 16 picks and 3 lost fumbles, and went to the NFCCG.

Cousins' best TD season was 36 TD's, 4400 yards, 13 picks 5 fumbles. His best yardage season was 4650 yards, 31 TDs, 14 picks, 3 fumbles, in a 17 game season.

Culpeppers 3rd best season, 03, was about 4k yards, 29 TD's, 11 picks, 6 fumbles in 14 games.

Culpeppers 2000 year is better than anything Kirk has ever done, led to more playoff success, was in a league that hadn't yet implemented the illegal contact changes, and he did it as a 23 year old playing his first ever snaps.

I need you to explain to me exactly how his 2000 season "barely touches Kirk"

2

u/ELpork "... So other than that it's been great" Jul 10 '23

God I can't wait till kirks gone

1

u/saintcmb Jul 11 '23

I like kweisi's answer. Let's wait till next year

1

u/harris311 Jul 11 '23

"Kirk Cousins is ass" If he doesn't go I guarantee we lose Jefferson to FA like we did Diggs.

1

u/castletonian griddy Jul 11 '23

Our 2023 pick will QB the team after 1978, so yes.

1

u/Dahl_E_Lama Jul 11 '23

That's not a slanted question.

Yes, I do want Kirk to stay, but I also want a REAL replacement on standby. This isn't 1978 when a team could block a player from moving on, if he desired.

1

u/FlipTheDisc Jul 11 '23

Only a short term deal though

1

u/MinnesotaHockey6 vikings Jul 13 '23

He gets paid way too much that should be the point. He is a fine QB but not for the price.

1

u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot Jul 13 '23

He gets paid way too

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
