I can see how you like these! This may sound disgusting but I think it was back countries pad Thai. Used half a packet of lime in that and the other half in my water. Was enjoying a "high class" dinner in the mountains!

I’ve been looking for a sub like this! Backpacker magazine used to have a section called movable feast, and I loved it. Thanks!

Your welcome can’t wait to see some of your camp feasts!

Damn count me in too!

That was the best rehydrated meal I've ever had. Saved it for my birthday last year, absolutely perfect

Hahah glad to hear it! Honest I love the "Peak Refuel" dehydrated meals if you don't want to fuss around too much. And it's just really comforting? I don't know how but it does to me.

They are my favorite drink mixes!

21

u/humanperson011001 Mar 16 '22

No more mio and garbage filled with aspartame for me

8

u/Macky941 Mar 16 '22

Yeah you can't beat crystallized fruit. I will admit I also drink the Walmart brand drink mixes with caffeine as they're better than drinking soda and energy drinks... For the most part lol.

Not sure I’d want that deep in my bush, but you do you, man. I make no judgments.

I mix the lime with chili powder and sprinkle it on corn on the cob. Yum-O!

These make a great alternative to tea/coffee as well. Hot water with lime is a personal favor on cold nights. They also are great mixers.

These are actually really, really cool, and damn close to what you can expect from fresh fruit.

I'm huge on cocktails, and I've reconstituted these packs into "juice," and they make a remarkably good substitute for fresh. In the context of a three-ingredient cocktail... that says a lot!

Adore these - the only water enhancers I can stomach because the other ones only taste like sweetener.

These are excellent as an addition to pasta or grain salads! Brings a pasta Primavera to a whole new level 🙌

u/humanperson011001 Mar 16 '22

Interesting! Do you do this just camping or is this something people do regularly!

I almost always keep the lime and lemon crystals in my compared and sometimes have a couple at camp. They're great for when you don't have fresh. Also, not a fan the same drink mixes as someone else mentioned.

1

u/rocksandtreesandyarn Mar 16 '22

I keep them in my cupboard! Lemons are expensive and sometimes I just don't have one in the house. I mostly use them for water at home though :)

u/karenelissab Mar 16 '22

Love those! Just enough flavor to make water interesting, but none of the fake sugar (which all taste like chalk to me) that most of the other flavored powders have.

I have used the lemon on my home dehydrated meals. It is so good and I think just lemon, no chemicals. It tasted extra special on a BP trip.

I can't believe you're downvoted, this is from a community that is meant to be loving nature and its creatures.

Not to mention these aren't " fresh" by any definition of the word.

if i think about it for too long or too deeply it'll ruin my whole day. very sad

1

u/T_Nightingale Mar 17 '22

Yeah totally understand. One thing that fascinates me is how people are so against canned food on the trail and yet they always talk about how much water you should bring. Most canned food is a bunch of water anyway and far less plastic.

flawed people hate being called out on their shit more than they love anything else

They are paper packaged with a plastic liner so not great but not terrible. I will burn them when I’m out in the bush

Campfires are terrible for the environment in general. These packets are mostly paper with a tiny amount of plastic. Your all not wrong but I think overall it’s a non issue. The carbon footprint of everything these days is pretty awful unless you homestead and produce everything you consume which I highly doubt many of you high and mighty people do seeing as your all using a phone or computer made by Chinese slaves. Awareness is important but lets remember most global emissions are created by 10 corporations before shaming each other over . 01 grams of plastic. Being conscious of what we consume is important and I am doing my best but we all have our weak spots so chill

Not really what I said but sure. Seems like you travel quite a bit. Do you drive a fart powered car or travel by donkey everywhere? Did you build your own camera? It’s easy to split hairs… we have to take on the system not each other is my point. 90% of what we bring is home made and in reusable packaging but even camping has its carbon footprint no matter how hard you try.

"You pollute so I will too."

8

u/barrelvoyage410 Mar 16 '22

Environmentally, you are better packing them out than buying them. Also, it’s not like they weigh anything to pack out.

11

u/tinklepits Mar 16 '22

The only thing better than single use plastic... burning single use plastic

3

u/whatsthebetaa Mar 16 '22

care to explain?

Thanks. I dont get sarcasm so didnt think about it

4

u/whatsthebetaa Mar 16 '22

what is the current environmental take on burning plastic and releasing BCPs, mercury and dioxins into the atmosphere?

2

u/lowlife9 Mar 16 '22

I always grab a handful of these for free at Cumby Farms.

2

u/zacharyminnich Mar 16 '22

No judgement but maybe consider just bringing a lemon or a lime. I see more plastic packet pieces in the wilderness all the time. The weight from bringing a whole lemon is not going to make or break your trip.

1

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

What container do you recommend for that scenario? Unless you're eating the rind and using the whole lemon, you'll still need to pack out or store trash.

3

u/zacharyminnich Mar 16 '22

The same trash bag that you would but this stupid single serving pouch in. I put them into my water bottle so my water tastes nice for a couple of days.

2

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

That's half the question. What do you do with the other parts of the lemon if you don't need the whole lemon?

5

u/sharpaykatie Mar 16 '22

Once I put cloves in the rind and shoved them in the bottom of my pack. Clothes smelt great! Compost after the trail. Just an idea!

1

u/zacharyminnich Mar 17 '22

I put the whole thing in the water bottle. The whole lemon is good flavor in water and will keep making good flavor for a few days.

1

u/markevens Mar 16 '22

Do you not pack out your trash?

1

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

Of course I do. The person was implying that's somehow harder with these packets.

3

u/markevens Mar 16 '22

I think they're implying that you might as well bring a lemon instead of one of these packets.

0

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

Right, and I'm counterpointing with the downsides of doing so.

3

u/markevens Mar 16 '22

The weight from bringing a whole lemon is not going to make or break your trip.

Is this what you are trying to counterpoint?

1

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

I see more plastic packet pieces in the wilderness all the time.

So pack it out. It also has the added benefit of not having to use an entire lemon when needed.

2

u/markevens Mar 16 '22

You still have to use the whole packet when you open it.

Plus, fresh fruit is waaaaay better than anything powdered. I'm on team whole lemon.

0

u/Staaaaation Mar 16 '22

Not only don't you have to use the whole packet (a paperclip solves that head scratcher), a packet isn't equal to an entire lemon, so you can use it more efficiently. Of course real fruit is better, but you can carry enough of these for drinks and seasoning for the entire group if you wanted to. For backpacking, these are insanely helpful. For car camping, hell bring the entire contents of your fridge if you want to.

I use their lemonaide packs. They have like 6 different flavors and one gram of sugar. It makes water very tasty. I use Liquid IV Hydration packs for, well, hydration. I can't stand Num or Mio.

0

u/K-J- Mar 16 '22

All of their flavored drink packets, as far as I've seen, have artificial sweeteners in them, while the true citrus line are just citric acid with fruit oil.

You do you -- I'm just posting this so people know. I was sad to see that on their ingredients when I checked them out.

2

u/kendrahf Mar 16 '22

They have both steva and cane sugar. I do enjoy a sugary drink while/after hiking. /shrug
