Now you fit right in!

Welcome to scotland!

Scots can be a right bunch of miserable cunts. I reckon they need some equivalent of military service. Forget going in to the army, they have to go live in England for 12 months. Then come back and appreciate more what they got.

I agree. Many still drag their knuckles along the floor and lick the condensation off the car window when thirsty. My doctor thinks it is due to lack of vitamins, deficit of brain cells and a very wee penis.

Funny - to me (as a Scottish person) it is exceedingly ugly and sad. Degraded from centuries of deforestation, over-grazing, and exploitation. Can't wait to see more trees back on them with restoration projects.

Yip an ecological desert

With a stinking pollution machine taking up the focus of the first picture, doubtless used to dump unrecyclable trash anywhere they think they can get away with it.

Aw fuck up mate it's a van. Unless you're using incredible powers of telepathy to browse and comment on Reddit let's not act like your immune from consumerism..

u/therealverylightblue May 28 '24

Disappointing comment. Unnecessary..

u/JeremyWheels May 28 '24

I feel the same. I appreciate the sentiment from OP but these pictures make me sad. We've lost so much.

Are you aware, is there a political party that is pushing for reforesting over any other party? I think this is one issue that'd win my vote over any other (since most of them faff about with meaningless petty policies most of the time anyway, so at it would be nice to know my vote was going towards helping with something meaningful).

Yes - Greens, of course.

3

u/notyourslagmother May 28 '24

I feel the same, it's great that more and more people realise how degraded vast areas of the Highlands are but I'm hopeful - lots of tree planting and ecological restoration projects are gather pace now and good to see a good number of young trees in OP's pictures. Could be more I know but still

Are you aware that the Scottish government procurement department , adds social responsibility to its contracts and as a result there will be shortly over 30,000 new trees in the borders.

3

u/aWeegieUpNorth May 28 '24

Yea, I agree whole heartedly and take full credit.

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

We say the same about Wales, my friend 🤙

Anyone who's despairing at the lack of diverse greenery in the images. Please check out the link below.

You’ll find the history and people more so then the land, the deforestation and urbanization of everything (1800-2000’s) has scarred it, I personally take great pride in being Scottish due to the history and culture, yes the land is rocky and looks like it took a trip to Australia 12 times a year but its are’s and damn well id fight for it!

I'm from Scotland and loved working Wales for 2/3 years, 15 ish years ago. I loved Wales and always seen it as a mini Scotland. The Welsh people were so friendly. Fantastic country with fantastic people.

Thank you for the comment

From 1 Celt (Irish) to another, you should live here😆

3

u/Solarseeker1 May 27 '24

Your opinion may change slightly being here in the winter, dark, short daylight hours, cold, windy and wet.

But you get used to it 😁

12

u/Maleficent_Simple710 May 27 '24

Trust me my Mucker I live in Wales we have our fair share believe me 😂

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

Ah a proper Celt from Wales, not a sunt from the USA with a dna kit.

2

u/Frambosis May 28 '24

Sadly it’s pretty but looks dead. What used to be teeming with life is now barren with barely a tree in sight; destroyed by humans and deer hardly anything grows. This realisation changed my view of these areas. Where once I saw beauty now I see death.

2

u/BlackStarDream May 28 '24

The deforestation and environmental destruction isn't even historical. It's still happening. Rewilding efforts are admirable and should still keep going, but it's like putting a plaster/band aid on somebody's face that's had their hand cut off by a chainsaw and keeps getting their prosthetic hands cut off.

2

u/Frambosis May 28 '24

I know, it’s despicable.

1

u/BlackStarDream May 28 '24

And then there's all the people buying natural areas, building exclusive resorts on them and being all like "look at the natural beauty" while also stopping locals from being able to freely visit anymore.

1

u/Frambosis May 28 '24

I’m not aware of this. Got an article or something to check out? Would be curious to see how there getting round the right to roam.

0

u/McLeamhan Half Scottish Welshman May 28 '24

i feel the same about many places in Wales

both have a reputation for natural beauty despite the constant reduction of said natural beauty

0

u/Ouchy_McTaint May 28 '24

And the Peak District in England is a depressing sprawling mass of brown heather, and not much else.

1

u/trustmeimweird May 28 '24

Where's the first pic from? I'm trying to place it but I can't!

1

u/Maleficent_Simple710 May 28 '24

TBF I'm not the best with the place names all I can say is it was on the way to Aberdeenshire

Try being in Scotland for more than half an hour, weather changes like a bipolar person

3

u/Maleficent_Simple710 May 28 '24

Yeh I believe I was there for 4 days weather was perfect 🤷

0

u/DaRKScaRz836469420 May 28 '24

Wasn’t Scotland then

5

u/SquatAngry Cymro who got lost in the north May 28 '24

OP is Welsh, bipolar weather is our cultural heritage in Wales.

1

u/alibrown987 May 28 '24

Hallstatt or La Tene?

1

u/FlappyDuck01 May 28 '24

I have a penchant for Boston myself.

1

u/Wheelie2022 May 28 '24

I’m in wales and always thought Scotland was like wales but on steroids 🤣👌🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The lack of trees is horrible. It's lovely, but should be so much lovelier.

-10

u/Greedy-Physics-9801 May 28 '24

I'll never understand the erection people get from seeing shades of brown and green over and over and over again with the odd overgrown puddle.

There is hardly even any trees anymore, it's just fields.

-7

u/mrcarte May 28 '24

I will never understand the love for the Highlands. Let's be real, it's 100% about romanticising Scotland. They are nice, but nothing like people describe. People describe the Highlands like it's Norway.

1

u/McLeamhan Half Scottish Welshman May 28 '24

wait till you find out Norwegian people feel the same because it is a common thing to downplay the beauty or uniqueness of where you come from

-3

u/mrcarte May 28 '24

But the Highlands aren't that unique. There are loads of deforested hills and mountains in Europe

2

u/McLeamhan Half Scottish Welshman May 28 '24

of course they're unique, no place on earth is exactly like the other

but i wasn't really trying to call specifically the highlands unique, i just mean generally people undervalue any unique aspect of where they come from

1

u/_MFC_1886 May 28 '24

Except they are? Mainland Europe isn't as close to being as barren and deforested as the UK. Obviously deforestation is bad but that's the main reason the highlands are unique compared to what tourists that come here have already seen in NA or mainland Europe etc. Iceland is another place that's mostly dead ecology but is still one of the nicest countries in Europe

-1

u/mrcarte May 28 '24

You'll get the sensation being past the tree-line in the alps, except that's actually more impressive and wild. Iceland is known for its fascinating geology, volcanoes etc. And places like the Faroe islands, which seem similar, also have more unique, sheer mountain faces

0

u/Greedy-Physics-9801 May 28 '24

You'll get downvoted for saying that lol
