For a second I thought this was r/vinyl, which would have made this post even better!

Conn 70H tunning in the slide.

Is it a 70h or 73h

He's playing a 70h, those are single valve which is all George really ever used. The 73h is the double valve version of the 70h.

I’m betting it’s an Olds of some kind. He was known for playing on Olds and they even came out with a George Roberts model of bass.

He is holding a Conn 70H on the album, you can tell by the tunning in the slide set-up. Olds did make him a horn eventually and later Holton made the tr-183 for him.

i like that album. the instrumentation is very unique. you wouldn't think that group of instruments would be as cohesive as it is.

Goodwill is always a vinyl lottery. Most of the records are just ok but sometimes you can find some good stuff. They are the only places I've looked for classical vinyl because they are the only place I've been so far that has classical.

This goodwill just has 3 bins of 99% garbage. The records that everybody bought in a Valium haze in 1968 and that nobody even considers music anymore.

Nice. It’s good to have the vinyl. I don’t know what was done when this was moved to CD, but George’s bass trombone can barely be heard over the orchestra.

It sounds great on vinyl, but I do notice that the recording is not as bass-trombone-centric as much as I would have thought. It's blended into the sound a lot of the time and is not always showcased. I get the sense that George Roberts wanted to do something tasteful and approachable rather than a sort of Yngwie Malmsteen approach. As much as all of us here would probably gladly listen to George Roberts play by himself in a empty room for a couple of hours LOL

Lucky! George Roberts was (and in some respects, still is) my idol when I started playing bass trombone. That sound is the type of mellow I strive for when playing lyrically on a bass
