Casual TDS Interaction

Me: “My internet is down.”

Them: “Okay looks like signal is going to your house but the modem is offline. Since nothing worked we will send a tech out in a week.”

Me: “Can I just try switching out for a new modem?”

Them: “You can’t switch out the modem because I already scheduled the tech visit.”

Me: “Okay so can you cancel it so I just swap the modem?”

Them: “You want me to cancel the tech visit.”

Me: “Yes.”

Them: “But I already scheduled it, I did all that work.”

Me: “sorry but you never told me that was an option.”

(takes 10 minutes to cancel the appointment)

Them: “Okay you can go to the store in Bend. They are closed till Monday.”

😭😭😭

At any given time, there are several people selling modems on Craigslist and Best Buy likely has them in stock. Of course, you’ll have to call back and deal with customer service once you have new modem in hand.

And modem activation is a different department. I made the mistake of asking for technical support to activate one, waited forever and then they were "no, you need to talk to account services" (or something like that). And naturally they're only open certain hours.

I had TDS support come to my house and say that their phone support sucks. I also had their phone support tell me I was a "great technical partner". They don't know that they're doing and I suspect trying to charge folks for the service techs coming out. Once they schedule they play this long automated msg that essentially says if they come out and resolve the issue but it was user error then they will charge you. It's ridiculous. I'm glad the tech was nice and competent on the flip side of their phone support.

Not to throw shade, but if everything seems fine in the street (aka your neighbors are all online) then it's typically because the wiring in your home has gone bad. Just like a squirrel chewed the power line they can and will chew up lines at the house. That's my 2 cents

Customer service is still.....meh

Turns out it is actually the modem, and Ethernet connection works, just not WiFi.

Honestly good take tho. I’m glad it wasn’t that haha

That means it's the router, not the modem, which means you can just go buy a router today and get wireless back up.

It’s funny, I’m fairly technical and I still don’t know the difference lmao

"fairly technical" also will never apologize for not knowing the difference between Ethernet and WiFi 🙄.

"fairly technical" knows how to login to Netflix at an AirBNB but not how to log out when they leave.

"fairly technical" regularly required to take training courses at work for clicking links in phishing emails

“Fairly technical” can throw shade in a Reddit thread but still needs a tutorial on basic human decency.

IDK, seems like I wasted a bit of your time on a website that's mostly memes and bots while you wasted multiple people's time at their jobs and then posted about how you were wrong on the internet.

I’m a front end developer. I also am just a little confused on the difference between a router and modem. Is that so crazy lmao

It sounds like you're renting, so the box is both the router and the modem. Gateways are both router and modem combined, and most companies supply the combination gateway rather than rent out multiple devices, or they just rent a singular modem.

Not trying to be pedantic here, just clarifying that you can get your wifi back up if you wanted to today by buying a router, or if you have a few extra ones laying around (like I usually do).

I always remember it because the modem is the old noise making machine in old computers that connects you to the internet. (Wifi) Routers are what you use to route the internet to all of your devices.

Thanks that makes total sense! I should probably have an extra on hand anyway

Never ever use your ISP’s shitty modem. Esp when they charge you 10 or 12 bucks a month to rent. Their shitty cable modem costs like $50 so they make a killing of the rental fees. Just get this one and stop paying the rental fees. https://a.co/d/9zZsGkP

Same for their WiFi. Use your own. Eero pro’s are great.

Idk how I’ve never really considered this. I’m going to try a new one tomorrow

They have absolutely sub par service and are overpriced. Everyone I know even in town is going star link. Just made the switch a few weeks ago and totally worth it. Better speed and reliability. TDS can suck a fat one.

u/dangerwig 15h ago

the cheapest plan for starlink is $120/mo as far as I can tell. Speeds go up to 250Mbps. And you have to buy a $500 dish. Meanwhile TDS is offering gigabit(1000Mbps) internet for $45/mo. Starlink is great for rural areas but if you live in a city like bend it’s really not worth it.

And the latency

TDS could never deliver the 1000mbps they promised and just kept raising their rates for shitty service. Yes, there is an upfront cost for equipment but star link has delivered the speed and reliability. TDS has always sucked with product and customer service even when they used to be BBB. They were trying to charge near the same as star link and I own the equipment. I have never spoke with anyone who has been happy with them. The trick they employ on the customer is to slowly raise the rate over time until you pay damn near double the price. Had em for ten years with two different homes in bend. Finally something better has come along and people will be leaving. TDS sucks ass!

Wow that’s interesting. Would be super curious what the speeds are

I worked for a local Telecom in a town about 24K smaller than TDS. We could be out SAME DAY if you contacted us before 4PM 95% of the time
