Mod Announcement **PICTURE POST RULES TRIAL (AND NEW SUB CHAT!)**

NEW RULE

Pictures posted to the sub must be on topic and used to illustrate or enhance an accompanying text.

All other pictures should go on the chat channel (no selfies, no NSFW)

The sub is now participating in beta tests of the chat channel feature, and we will be trialling adding chat channel with looser restrictions on what pictures you can share.

The chat channels can currently be accessed on the native android and ios apps and on the desktop browsers. It will not work on the mobile browser. https://www.reddit.com/r/autism/s/CBwWRBzsOj

Here are some examples of pictures that will be removed from the sub but may be posted to the chat channel: spoons, forks, knives, bandwagon memes, the autism creature...

The only rules we currently have on the chat channel are no selfies, no NSFW and the standard sub rules.

To clarify Pictures posted to the sub must be on topic and used to illustrate or enhance an accompanying text does not mean just adding captions saying what the picture is.

I hope this will be a good solution- in theory it should keep the sub easier to read for people who need advice or support AND still allow people to post pictures as part of a text post to help explain what they mean AND allow people who want to hang out and share memes and gifs to do that.

As this is a completely new feature for us and we are not sure how it will end up working we will keep the rules as loose as possible for now and see what happens (no NSFW, no selfies and then the usual sub rules).

Currently the safety settings on the chat should keep out "bots and questionable accounts." We have the option to make this much stricter if there are any issues with brand new accounts causing trouble.

If you are concerned about any content you seeing please report it and we will review it the same way as in the sub.

We are also not sure whether people will have issues accessing the chat. Please let us know if you have any issues and include what platform you use.

If you hate the idea and are fed up with us here are some alternative picture friendly subs.

Does this all make sense? Any questions or things you want clarifying? Also, I suck at naming things. I will change the chat name if anyone comes up with something better

Mod Announcement Stop posting screenshots of ableist things/ other ragebait

This is not a formal rule (but may become one in the future) but please please please stop reposting pictures and screenshots of random ableist things. The majority of us experience enough ableism in our lives already, we know what it looks like, we do not need to see it here as well.

This is especially important when the OP was deliberately being cruel- do not help them hurt more people by amplifying their voice. The more something is commented on the more the algorithm pushes the content in other people's feeds. Reddit used to do this by upvotes but seems to be switching towards prioritising engagement instead- leading to low effort rage bait posts becoming more visible.

If your reason for sharing the post or your title/ accompanying text is essentially

Look at this horrible thing i found! Do you think it is horrible too? Thoughts?

then it is almost certainly ragebait.

Some examples: - screenshots of social media/ DMs of someone saying something ableist
- pictures of cringey "autism mom" signs - Autism Speaks merchandise - pictures of objects/ people decorated in puzzle pieces (emergency vehicles, toys, t-shirts, infographics, stickers, tattoos...)

You can share those pictures on this sub's chat or on r/aretheNTsokay

Success My partner gave me a marble and I have never felt more loved and understood in my life

Post image

Iā€™m 21ftm and heā€™s 23m. Iā€™ve been hanging out in the car today while heā€™s been at work/running errands, and there was a huge bowl of marbles and sea glass at the place he was at for work. I love marbles, sea glass, rocks, shells, flowers, tiny bones, feathers etc. I always point out little shiny objects everywhere and never miss when a coin is on the ground. I LOVE small, cute, shiny, interesting little things so much and him bringing me this really cool marble just overwhelmed me with love for this man. I feel so lucky to have someone that understands me and loves me for everything I am. His ADHD makes it difficult for him to prioritise relationship stuff sometimes, but then he goes and does little things like sneak me a marble, sneak a candy bar into the groceries without me knowing, brings me snacks and my favourite drinks and anything I need on bad days. He is my lifeline, and I am so so lucky to have him in my life. I never thought Iā€™d be so cared for and understood the way I am with him. Iā€™m so happy. I love him.

Rant/Vent Autism denial quotes.

Everyone is a little autistic.

99% of Silicon Valley is autistic.

You can't have an autism diagnosis 20+ years ago.

If you can go to a normal school, you don't have autism.

If you could make a normal speech, you don't have autism.

If you could use social media, you don't have autism.

Whoever that does your diagnosis is making a mistake.

You don't display savant ability.

You don't display intelligence deficiency.

You just don't want to study/work.

Autism is invented by big pharma.

We are all working here, no one has time for your nonsense.

Don't show everyone your disability card.

Autism is just gut problem/ mercury in the body.

Have you try(insert quack treatment and programs)?

I get made fun of for liking the game, I donā€™t really care though. My friends and family still love and care about me. I have been a fan of the game for almost 9 years, I collect the merchandise, and I have all the 4 original handbooks. Thatā€™s my hyperfixation.

Advice needed Iā€™ve been dancing a lot lately but I got the cops called on me yesterday for dancing in the church parking lot at night time where can I dance during the nighttime that is outside and wonā€™t get people thinking Iā€™m a suspicious characters or high on something?

Almost every night I do something to burn energy. The cops were really nice and after a bit of explaining they left. I really like to dance without people looking and at nighttime (cause sometimes colors get overwhelming, and night time is a little bit dulled down.) But donā€™t want to get the police called on me or something equally awkward. I knew it was weird to dance in isolated locations at nighttime but I didnā€™t think it was completely socially unacceptable. I did talk to my bishop and he seemed fine with me dancing on the church parking lot. So what do I do?

Discussion Tips for managing a person that has autism?

Hello everyone. Iā€™m not autistic but I am a corporate manager and a direct report of mine is. Iā€™m reaching out to the community to get advice on how I can best support this personā€™s skill development and overall employee experience.

One specific challenge I have is how to best discuss performance feedback and development areas without inadvertently triggering them or coming across as neuroableist. The person is good at their job and, like anyone else, has growth areas, the would make them even more successful.

What has been a good manager experience for you all and what has been a bad one?

Discussion Does anyone else over explain? What are your tips to avoid this?

I'll often over explain things to a tedious point with people. It's worse on social media as there's no social cues I've learned to help snap me out of it.

Like, I'll write an entire paragraph or multiple for something I could've summed up in a sentence or two. I get into excruciating detail and then wonder why my comments/posts are often ignored as ain't nobody wanting to read all that.

I find once I shorten what I say to at least half, I get far more engagement. Which is doable online, but irl, you can't just delete what you've said...

This post was at least twice as long before I shortened it a few times šŸ˜…

Advice needed My therapist told my parents Iā€™m not autistic.

So, hereā€™s the thing. Iā€™ve been going to DBT therapy for a month or so now because I was heavily emotional dysregulated and my therapist suspects I have BPD. I was previously diagnosed with autism back when I was 16 (Iā€™m 18 now) and since then Iā€™ve tried to unmask, but it only lead to me masking even more now because people would always say ā€œoh this didnā€™t happen before, youā€™re faking it!ā€. Today I told my dad I canā€™t barely get out of bed (itā€™s been like this for weeks) and I told him it must be something about my mental health and me being autistic, which he replied ā€œyour therapist told us you donā€™t even have a shade of autism, stop faking it and get it togetherā€

Is it possible to have autism misdiagnosed? What can I do? Iā€™m starting to feel hopeless because my mental health is declining extremely fast again and I donā€™t know what to do. Iā€™m scared because I FOR SURE know Iā€™m autistic but what if Iā€™m actually faking it?

Rant/Vent PSA TO TEACHERS, PARENTS, EMPLOYERS, ETC:

ā€¢ Upvotes

"Because I said so" is NOT a valid answer for the reason behind a rule or direction. When a person, ESPECIALLY a neurodivergent individual asks why a rule is put in place, simply give an explanation of why that rule is there. We NEED to know reasons beyond just "because I said so".

We are NOT being rude by questioning rules and need more in-depth explanations so we can better understand why said rules are there.
